Great Ale Since 1843

Arkell's Brewery celebrated 170 years of brewing in 2013 by throwing its doors open on Saturday 07 September for an Open Day and Beer Festival at Kingsdown Brewery, Swindon, for visitors to tour one of the very few remaining working Victorian breweries in the world, and taste beers from across the UK.

We believe that without raw materials of exceptional quality it is impossible to produce first-rate beers. This is why we go to great efforts to source the best malted barley from around the UK and spend the hop harvest every year picking out the finest grown hops for our Ales. We have a staple of distinctive regular beers and also introduce seasonal and special ales throughout the year.

Rugbeer (ABV: 4.2%)

15th May marks the return of our extremely popular Rugbeer. This time we have brewed it for the Lions Tour of New Zealand which kicks off on the 3rd June. We have used four different types of malt, some wheat and a good dose of English hops to create this deep, amber coloured, moreish, toffee flavoured beer.

Strawberries & Cream (ABV: 4.5%)
Image

Wimbledon starts on the 3rd of July, the suns out (today at least), and we’re excited! So to celebrate the most quintessential English event of the summer we thought we would brew a beer to spread the summer joy. Strawberries ‘n’ Cream is brewed with some barley, oats and wheat; topped up with hops from around the world, all selected for their summer fruity aromas, and finally a hint of strawberry to round this complex beer off as a refreshing summer pint - cheers!

1843 (ABV: 4.2%)
Image

Our craft house 'lager' was first brewed to mark the year John Arkell started brewing beer on the site here in Swindon and 2013 being our 170th anniversary. This is a classic 'craft' lager brewed using pale malt with some wheat added for extra body and mouth feel and traditional lager hops. It is gradually fermented at a much lower temperature and matured for 3 weeks in tank at an even lower temperature to produce a pleasant, light, refreshing beer. 4.2% ABV. Awards: SIBA's BeerX celebration of British Beer Gold Award 'Champion' Beer 2014 & SIBA Pale and Golden Lagers Gold Award South Region 2014

Hurricane Ale (ABV: 4.0%)
Image

So popular, we've made it one of Arkell's house beers, now straight from the keg. Naturally, Arkell's Hurricane Ale (4% ABV) uses the lemony Pilot hops which, when combined with Maris Otter Malt, give the beer a delicious, well-rounded finish - like a Hurricane coming into land.

A light golden coloured Ale brewed using English Maris Otter malt, which creates a satisfyingly sweet malty flavour. The use of traditional hops give the beer a mellow floral hop aroma followed by a distinctive hoppy taste. Serve slightly chilled.

Moonlight (ABV: 4.5%)
Image

Originally brewed as a special in 2003 to celebrate the 80th birthday of Peter Arkell OBE, father of the present Chairman James. The name moonlight portrays Peter's missions flying low-level sorties over France in 1943, picking up agents in occupied territory using the moon to land. The label on the bottle has a Lysander plane on it, which Peter Arkell actually flew in. Now a regular beer, Moonlight has a golden auburn colour with a warm toasty aroma and distinctive citrus hoppy flavour from Celeia hops.

Bottled Beers

We also bottle some of our beers. We started bottling beer all the way back in the 1930's, this requires a careful conditioning process in the brewery in our cold tanks. The beers are then gently filtered to increase the shelf life and filled into bottles. Our regular bottled beers available are KINGSDOWN, MOONLIGHT, LIGHT ALE, BEE's ORGANIC, WILTSHIRE GOLD.

ARKELL'S KINGSDOWN (ABV: 5%)
clip-kingsdown

Kingsdown was relaunched as 'special' to commemorate Swindon Town Football Club’s 1969 League Cup triumph and has been brewed regularly from 1976.

The strongest of our regular beers, Kingsdown has a rich chestnut brown colour, a full bodied malty nose and bold traditional flavour.
