The team look forward to welcoming you to a new and exciting Carpenter’s Arms.

-----

Rather than just another pub, The Carpenters Arms is a proper country pub where people and dogs are genuinely welcomed.

It has a selection of good, honest pub food, real ales from local brewer Arkell’s and delightful accommodation.

- half a mile from Newbury bypass
- close to Newbury racecourse & Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)
- accommodation rooms (one disabled room)
- Sunday lunch

With plenty of pubby character and really friendly, cheerful staff, this bustling inn has a good mix of both locals and visitors. It is comfortable and understated with stools, lots of tables and a roaring log fire in wintertime.

And pubs don't come in settings much better than that of The Carpenters Arms, either, which overlooks Watership Down, the inspiration for the famous story and film written by Richard Adams. The pub was indeed honoured be the venue for Mr Adams' wake after he sadly died in 2016.

Another neighbour you may well be familiar with is Highclere Castle, the historic setting for the award winning Downton Abbey.

And last, but certainly not least, you are welcome to walk in the footsteps of another celebrated local, the world famous English artist, Sir Stanley Spencer.

He lived a stone’s throw from The Carpenters Arms and painted local Burghclere scenes as well as his unique and moving murals at the Sandham Memorial Chapel in Burghclere.

So for good food, real ales, delightful accommodation and a blend of the country and culture – make time to visit Burghclere, make time to enjoy The Carpenters Arms.
