One of Arkell's and Swindon's newest built pubs, The Jovial Monk opened its doors to the public on 15 November 2000.
Located at St Andrew's Ridge on the Abbey Meads estate, it serves a growing local population in north Swindon.

Disabled visitors will be pleased to see that Arkell's have paid particular attention to their needs. Access to all areas has been extremely well thought out. This includes the bedrooms which are accessible via a stair-lift.
A little bit of history....
The name "The Jovial Monk" came from local resident Andrew Batch after Arkell's asked the wider Swindon community to come up with an appropriate name. Andrew e-mailed the brewery with his suggestion, which makes reference to the local history - the area was reputed to have had a monastery - and the brewery felt that the name would bring a smile to its customers' faces, especially with the pub sign featuring 'monk' caricatures of the current chairman of the brewery, James Arkell, managing director George Arkell and the late Peter Arkell, who officially drank the first pint.
