The Saracens Head Hotel is one of Highworth's oldest buildings and certainly one of its grandest.
- New, covered terrace & garden
- En-suite accommodation
- Close to M4 and the Cotswolds
- Food served lunchtimes and evenings + regular theme nights
- 2 bars
Arkell's have owned the pub since 1883 and The Saracens Head that we see today is the result of a thoughtful renovations in 1966 and 2012 which ensured that the grandeur of this magnificent old building was retained.
An oak-panelled lounge bar with a roaring fire and even a sofa is often enough to convince visitors to make a whole evening of it and enjoy a good value bar or restaurant meal during their visit.
And if you are tempted to stay even longer, The Saracens Head offers accommodation with 12 comfortable bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms, TV's, telephones and tea-making facilities.
A little bit of history....
Though the archway at the front of the building which led to the yard at the rear has now been replaced with an imposing doorway, it is not difficult to imagine how it must have been a century or two ago when it looked out across a busy scene in Market Square.
The Saracens Head was certainly in use as an inn of some kind in 1825 and is probably much older. Just how old has sadly not been recorded, but it has been suggested that it was once part of the local manor and stands on the site of an old monastery. There is also believed to be a tunnel (now bricked up) which leads from the cellar, under Market Square and towards St Michael's Church.
